Gargi Dasgupta Chosen as Winner of 2021 ACM India Outstanding Contributions to Computing by a Woman (OCCW) Award

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) India Council has named Dr. Gargi Dasgupta as the recipient of the 2021 ACM India Outstanding Contributions in Computing by a Woman (OCCW) Award. A selection committee comprising eminent international personalities chose Gargi for this edition of the award.
The ACM India OCCW Award recognizes women professionals who have made fundamental, innovative and impactful contributions to computing field primarily working in India. The award is accompanied by the citation: "An excellent researcher and business leader, with the distinction of being the first ever woman Director of IBM Research India, Dr. Dasgupta has enabled enterprise transformation through the use of AI in business automation and information technology. She has been promoting collaborations across academia, government and industry, and personally advocating for and mentoring women in computing."
Gargi Dasgupta is the Director of IBM Research India and Chief Technology Officer of IBM India/South Asia. She is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and the first woman to head IBM Research India.
Gargi is also a well-respected technologist externally. She participated in the Carnegie Global Technology summit panel on "AI in Everyday Life". She has been an ACM Distinguished Speaker and is a much-sought-after speaker on numerous technology topics including AI and automation. She has delivered keynote address at ACM WIC, IEEE TenSymp, ACM Grad Cohort, NASSCOMM, and Carnegie Technology Summits over the last few years. She has also had great outreach impact through her keynotes and talks at major Indian conferences like ICACCI, NPTEL, WinTechCon, ACM-WIT, and Grace Hopper Celebration. She is the General Co-chair for the upcoming CODS-COMAD 2022 conference, the premier data and knowledge conference in India.
Gargi is an outstanding champion of diversity and inclusion initiatives. She recently joined CodeTigers community in India for an Hour of Code activity on Facebook Live. She is a frequent speaker at events focused on women students and professionals in Computing. She conceived, developed, and executed Maitreyee, an exclusive diversity outreach program at IBM Research India, with the mission to enable computer science women researchers from academia and industry to collaborate, learn, network, exchange ideas and grow their technical careers. Gargi has mentored several top talent women and helped them in their career journeys.
A graduate of Jadavpur University, Gargi earned her PhD in Computer Science from University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
