Apologizing for the Poorly-Written Tweet
May 26, 2020
ACM apologizes for the social media post issued last week about an article on face masks and facial recognition software. The posting was intended to inform our community about research that is currently underway, not as an endorsement of the facial recognition industry nor as an implication that any type of technology is more important than public health considerations. The post and follow up message were deleted as soon as we realized that they were open to other interpretations.
ACM’s technology policy groups have been drafting a statement on the responsible development, evaluation, and deployment of facial recognition technologies. It is in the final stages of preparation and should be issued in the near future.
