ACM Group Names Pioneer in Visual Information Retrieval for Top Technical Award

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – November 7, 2011 – ACM’s Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM) will present its prestigious technical achievement award to Shih-Fu Chang of Columbia University for his pioneering contributions to content-based multimedia analysis and retrieval.  His approach to files that contain images, scanned documents, audio recordings, and video clips has shaped the direction of these applications, which are becoming more mainstream as computers and Internet connections are upgraded in schools, libraries and homes.  The 2011 SIGMM Award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications will be presented at the ACM International Conference on Multimedia  November 28 – December 1, in Scottsdale, AZ.

Chang, who leads the Digital Video and Multimedia Lab at Columbia, invented novel systems that combine content analysis, adaptive mobile communication, and multimedia summarization of content, which contains combinations of print and images.  Among the image/video search engines he and his students developed in the 1990’s were VideoQ, VisualSEEk, and WebSEEk. Other significant contributions by his research group include large-scale concept-based video search engines, a widely used library of image classification models, international multimedia indexing/communication standards, and large multimedia ontologies or conceptual frameworks.  

Chang led the ADVENT university-industry research consortium with the participation of more than 25 industry sponsors.  Many of the video indexing technologies developed by his group have been licensed to commercial companies.  An advisor for several media technology companies and research institutions, Chang has received broad support from government agencies as well as industry sponsors for his research. 

Chang is an IEEE Fellow and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  He won a Recognition of Service Award from ACM in 2000, and his group was honored with the Most Cited Paper of the Decade Award from the Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation in 2010.  

 A Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Columbia, Chang is Co-Founder and Chief Scientist of MediaQuest Technologies Inc.  He was a Visiting Faculty Researcher at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in 2005-6, and at Microsoft Research Asia in 2006.  He earned a B.A. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley.
