ACM and Publons form Partnership to Reward Article Reviewers

New York, NY, February 27, 2020 – ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, has announced an effort to better serve and incentivize those who review ACM publications. Using the Publons Reviewer Recognition Service, reviewers of ACM publications will now be able to create a profile and to track, verify and promote their efforts. Publons, which is owned by Clarivate Analytics, offers a verified record of a reviewer’s editorial activity for a publication that can be used for CVs, profiles, tenure packages, and any other documents that list professional credentials.

“The volunteer efforts of those who review research papers are essential to ACM’s work as the world’s leading computing society,” said ACM Director of Publications Scott Delman. “Reviewers ensure that those who read our publications will encounter research that meets the highest editorial standards, and that each research paper falls within the scope of a given ACM journal. Our new partnership with Publons will not only ensure that reviewers receive the professional recognition they deserve, but that the recognition has been verified by an independent third-party source.”

Publons is an opt-in service and does not compromise the blind or double-blind review process. Only the journal name for each review is associated with the reviewer’s profile, enough for a reviewer to get verified recognition for his or her work but not revealing any confidential details. Additionally, there is typically a natural delay between the time a reviewer submits a review (and opts in for Publons recognition) and when the author gets the reviewer’s feedback (which is the delay between the time it takes for all reviews to be completed and then for the editor to make a decision). This delay further impedes reviewer identification.
