Computing for Healthcare Innovations Highlighted in New ACM Journal
Wearable Technologies for Smart Health Are Focus of Premiere Issue
New York, NY, March 3, 2020 – ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, today released the inaugural issue of ACM Transactions on Computing for Healthcare (HEALTH), a new journal envisioned as the premier publication of high-quality research on how computing is improving healthcare. HEALTH is multidisciplinary in scope, intersecting computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, behavioral and social science, psychology, and the health field in general.
“The application of computing technologies to healthcare is one of the fastest-growing areas in industry and research,” said HEALTH Co-Editor-in-Chief Insup Lee of the University of Pennsylvania. “Surprisingly, there is currently no high-quality journal in this space. HEALTH will address the need for a journal in this emerging area and showcase how computing technology may be applied to enhance healthcare outcomes.”
The inaugural issue of ACM Transactions on Computing for Healthcare focuses on wearable technologies for smart health. Articles include a study of the use of wearable devices for diagnostics and the guidance of treatment, as well as a feasibility study of monitoring the deterioration of outpatients using data collected by wearables.
“From Fitbits to using AI to predict cancer, the use of computing in healthcare is all around us,” added HEALTH Co-Editor-in-Chief John A. Stankovic of the University of Virginia. “Although in many ways, the field has come into its own very recently, a journal in this area is long overdue. We believe that HEALTH will be an important repository, where the innovations of tomorrow are first shared with the public. It is especially exciting to be at the forefront of a nascent field that promises to have a tremendous impact on our lives in the coming years.”

In addition to Co-Editors-in-Chief Lee and Stankovic and Information Director Meiyi Ma of the University of Virginia, the HEALTH editorial board includes Advisory Board Members Deborah Estrin of Cornell University; William Kaiser of University of California Los Angles; Rosalind Picard of Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and 27 Associate Editors drawn from countries around the world, including China, Denmark, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Norway, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
