Minutes of the May 5, 2000 SGB EC Conference Call
1) Review status of current action items -
The following Action Items were reported closed:
Action: Chesnais to provide access to Cassel to update conference software file on web. (4/7/00)
Action: Baer to clarify with Baglio how (endorsing in principle external relationship between Eurographics and SIGGRAPH) can work without violating ACM policy. (4/7/00)
Action: Baer to inform Judy Brown of decision and work with Judy Brown on outline for presentation to the ACM EC. (4/7/00)
Action: Johnson to send email to Judy Brown that the SGB EC approves the award on the condition that it is more clearly defined before the call for nominations is published. (4/7/00)
2) SIGBIO Discussion
Notkin reported that a program plan was received from SIGBIO. The plan did not provide a "lay of the Land" for the roles of ACM & Computational Biology. There was concern that if we agreed to move it forward; it would not represent ACM. Different ideas flowed on how to handle this. All agreed that clarity is required on what the "lay of the Land" is and discussed setting up a team to carry this out. More discussion took place on the need to figure out if we are not covering certain areas in Bio diversity groups. There was discussion on dissolving SIGBIO since the group is not meeting membership expectations. Two important factors need to be looked at- 1) external appearance & 2) resources the structure holds. There was concern about the SIGBIO name bringing value to the organization and its name being "tainted" and how there is no recovery from this.
Action: Notkin & Soffa to figure out how to step forwardness with SIGBIO.
3) SIGCUE Discussion
SIGCUE has not completed any of their scheduled program reviews during the past 18 months. The SIGCUE Chair has agreed, within the last three weeks, to send a letter to the membership on the dissolution of the SIG. The letter might go under D. Notkin's name in the next couple of weeks. Consensus is that the dissolution will pass at the upcoming SGB meeting (fall). Question at hand is to figure out what to do with its current membership and collected dues.
4) SIGDA as a Society
Baer reported that there was nothing to discuss since he has not received the proposal from SIGDA Chair.
